Science and The Secret

It’s not ‘wishful’ thinking.”  – The Secret

“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simpleBut it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”   – Steve Jobs

Coaching, Science and The Secret… or more specifically, Coaching and Neuroscience, Mindfulness, The Secret, The Law of Attraction and Spirituality

Neuroscience

All through the 90s coaches knew that coaching worked as it produced consistently impressive results. But there was little science to back up their findings.

David Rock, founder and CEO of Results Coaching Systems, now the Neuro Leadership Group, was one such coach. That was until the early 2000s when he found that contemporary neuroscience offered a more coherent and useful explanation for the efficacy of the coaching process.

One of the reasons I chose to start my coach training with Results Coaching Systems (now Neuro Leadership Group) was their explanation and commitment to coaching with the brain in mind. Thanks to neuroscience, we now have a scientific base that can explain a number of conundrums such as:

  • why we tend to repeat the same mistakes over again, despite being sure we won’t
  • why when you want to buy a new car, overnight, the town is full of just the sort of car you are thinking of buying
  • why we find it so hard to break a habit
  • why it takes so much effort to change
  • why our brains get tired and overwhelmed, and how we can maximise our mental resources
  • why it’s so hard to focus, and how to better manage distractions
  • how to maximize our chances of finding insights that can solve seemingly insurmountable problems
  • how to keep our cool in any situation, so that we can make the best decisions possible
  • how to get on better with others
  • how to be more effective at changing other people’s behaviour

Mindfulness & Spirituality

Gurus and religious folk have been doing it for thousands of years. It’s got a number of names; meditation, quieting the mind, consciousness and more recently the newest word for it, mindfulness. Well its finally got the attention of the modern corporate world, because it’s been proven scientifically that letting go and quieting the mind actually allows us to think of solutions, or perhaps more rightfully worded, stumble on solutions. The more we practice it, the more we seem to get those light bulb moments, intuitive knowing and sudden insights about something that no matter how much we think about it, we can’t seem to find an answer. When someone suggests the old remedy of, ‘just go for a walk’, ‘call a friend’ or ‘do something to take your mind off it’, they may not know it but they are in fact encouraging you into a state of informal mindfulness. Have you ever woken up in the night with ‘The Answer”? By letting go it seems, we get to find the answers we are looking for and they are normally within. And just because there is a scientific explanation to what is happening in the brain, doesn’t mean there isn’t a spiritual side or Higher Power Consciousness. In fact it complements spirituality rather perfectly.

The Law of Attraction

And finally, my journey into more consciousness began with The Secret. It is my opinion that there are many holes in the original book, but it does seem the universe (or maybe just our brains, or both, depending on what you believe) really do want to give us what we are really asking for.

I have seen it over and over during a coaching series, clients struggle with an issue and then boom, there’s a breakthrough and it seems to come out of nowhere.

There are many people who say the Law of Attraction is rubbish because they haven’t got what they want. Well, maybe they are right, maybe not. I have a theory though, that sometimes I throw out my wishes to the universe or to use coaching terms, set my goals, but I never really believe that I deserve or am worthy of reaching them. It may be subconscious, but in all the cases I haven’t fully believed in the goal, I haven’t been able to reach it. That’s why I encourage my clients to challenge their hidden beliefs about themselves. It is often these beneath-the-surface beliefs that sabotage our journey to our goals.Combining Hypnotherapy and Coaching makes this process even more achievable, plausible and understandable.
